3 Signs Your To-Do List Is Hurting Your Productivity
You open your to-do list in the morning, and your stomach drops a little.
Here are three signs your list is working against you:
⚠️ You finally get a free hour and can't pick where to start. So you end up in your inbox, and the hour is gone.
⚠️ You check off the easy stuff first. Ordering the birthday gift and answering three emails feels great, until 4:00 hits and the big thing hasn't been touched.
⚠️ Some tasks have been on there so long, they've become furniture. You don't even see them anymore, but they still weigh on you every time you open the list.
The longer the list gets, the more overwhelmed you feel just looking at it. Your to-do list has turned into one long reminder of everything you haven't done.
The fix isn't a new app or a prettier planner. It's learning to separate what you need to remember from what you're actually doing today. That's what we work on together in coaching: becoming the woman who looks at her list in the morning and knows exactly where to start.
I know this one personally. I used to write twenty things on my list, check off four, and spend the evening feeling like I'd gotten nothing done. Then I'd copy the sixteen unfinished items onto tomorrow's list before adding twenty new ones.
What changed it for me was splitting one giant list into two. A Brain Dump holds everything, so it's out of your head. A daily Top 3 holds only what you're committing to today.
With my clients, we take it further: what goes in your Top 3 when everything feels urgent, where the nice-to-haves go, and how to keep the list from creeping back up to twenty.
Picture closing your laptop at 5:00, knowing the three things that mattered most actually got done. Everything else is safe on your Brain Dump. You're not lying awake at 3am running through tomorrow's list.
A long list keeps you busy. A short list gets you somewhere.

HOT OFF THE PRESS
“The good news is you can make your own stopping point anytime that you want.”
When you make “everything is finished” the requirement for being done with work, you’ll never be done with work.
There is always another email. Another task. Another thing someone needs.
And suddenly, 6 PM becomes 6:30. 6:30 becomes 7.
And even when you finally walk out the door, your brain is still at your desk.
This is where so many overwhelmed working women get caught. Because wanting to finish things sounds responsible. It sounds productive. It sounds like the kind of thing a good employee should do.
But eventually, that desire to be responsible follows you home. You're answering one more email during dinner. Thinking about tomorrow while you're watching TV. And lying in bed mentally sorting through everything you didn't finish.
That's the trap. And it's exactly why learning to create an intentional stopping point can change more than just your workday. Listen now to get your evenings and weekends back!

“You don't necessarily need more time. All you need is for the decision to be made before the time shows up.”
A meeting gets canceled, and suddenly you've won the productivity lottery! An entire hour to yourself. Except, somehow, you don’t make any progress because you spent the time debating about which project to work on.
When everything feels equally important you can spend your most valuable hours thinking about the work instead of actually doing it. The result? You feel busy all day, but when you finally close your laptop, you still feel behind.
You don't necessarily need more time. You need a way to stop letting the decision about what to do consume the time you do have and feel more confident about where your attention belongs.
Listen now for a practical approach to making decisions about your workload feel less overwhelming, so you can stop getting stuck in your own head and start making meaningful progress.
